Luke Workman

Chief Scientist
Electric Goddess

Chief Scientist - Electric Goddess (Present)

Luke has failed hard and fast in his career. His passion for physics, racing, and mindful design considerations have paved the way with lessons learned to his success. He previously was a freelance consultant for various groups and projects that included Airbus, Joby Aviation, Alphabet, and more. He is a mentor and leads R+D at Electric Goddess.

Chief Battery Scientist - Redivivus Inc. (Present)

Luke’s previous experience working on cell recycling at cell manufacturers in Asia has made him a veteran in an emerging industry. He utilizes his niche skillset and industry knowledge to develop innovative technology for Redivivus.

Senior Engineer + Battery Specialist - Zero Motorcycles

Luke created battery designs that significantly increased the capacity and life of the vehicle while reducing manufacturing time and cost. Iterations of this design are used today as a benchmark in electrical vehicle concepts. Luke also co-developed the cooling design of industry-leading high-efficiency brushless traction motors.

Critical Environment Engineer - Microsoft

Luke innovated design in server cooling for data centers allowing higher critical power density. The decrease in power usage effectiveness (PUE) resulted in meaningful cost savings and pollution reduction around the globe.

3:20 p.m.–4:00 p.m. Pacific: Charging Advancements and Battery Safety

Safely charging batteries in a reasonable time requires the thoughtful design of the battery by the OEM. We will talk about a healthy battery's environmental, thermal, and runaway prevention testing considerations for design. Our discussion will cover trade-offs between popular design concepts and charger to vehicle interfaces. We will end our talk on the collaboration humanity needs to charge forward with EVs.

Takeaways:

  • Prevention of fires starts with battery design
  • Higher or lower battery system voltage trade-offs
  • How to determine a cell safe maximum charge rates
  • Power-sharing to form a charging utopia
