Paul Kempf is the Associate Vice President of Utilities, Maintenance. These two University departments are responsible for the operation of the campus’s combined heat and power plant, distribution of all centrally produced utilities as well as the maintenance of nearly 12 million gross square feet of campus facilities.

The University uses its combined heat and power plant to produce steam, chilled water, hot water and electricity as well as operates its own potable water, stormwater and wastewater systems.

In his role he has been responsible for leading the University’s effort to achieve carbon reductions and to ultimately be carbon neutral.

Paul oversees a staff of over 100 University employees as well as another 100+ contractor employees involved in projects, operations, maintenance and repairs.

He is a 1980 graduate of Notre Dame with a degree in Electrical Engineering and is a registered professional engineer in the State of Indiana and has worked for the University for 35 years.

The California State University (CSU) system is the country's largest four-year public university system. The CSU is made up of 23 campuses across the state of California. Every campus has an EV charging program totaling 827 Level 2 charges and 32 Level 3 chargers systemwide. Join this Shop Talk to learn from transportation and parking leaders across the CSU system as they share their diverse approaches to implementation and funding strategies based on university location and charging needs.

The University of Notre Dame, as part of its sustainability strategy, is working to develop an on-campus fleet vehicle EV plan, including centralized EV charging for campus-owned and operated service and rental vehicles used by a broad constituency.  Additionally, the university seeks to support and encourage EV deployment by faculty, staff, students, and visitors whilst being mindful of the potential carbon and infrastructure impacts on the campus.  Considering typically short commutes in its mid-sized midwestern urban area, the university seeks to be a support and not a primary source for charging.  Using the benefits of a dynamic charging software platform, it seeks to gauge charging patterns, needs, and locations to right-size our offerings. As an Alliance customer of Eaton, the University of Notre Dame continues to work in partnership with them as it addresses the growing need for EV charging.
